Next morning, Lucy reads the details of the doomed ship Demeter; how all the men on board are missing except for the boatsman, who was found dead, tied to the wheel. Of the strange dog seen leaving the ship just before the ship was boarded. Of the fisherman Swales found dead nearby. Mina receives another letter from Jonathan but longs for his return home so they can be together again.
Mina wakes up in the middle of the night to find that Lucy is walking in her sleep. Mina follows and finds Lucy in a graveyard with a mysteriuous tall man dressed all in black with her. The man disappears in a cloud of smoke making Mina wonder if he was there at all. She hurries to Lucy, wrapping a shawl around her neck, and thinks she accidentally caused the two small punctures on Lucy's neck with a pin. Soon there is a noted change in Lucy's demeaner and she seems anemic.
Dracula appears the next night and drinks more of Lucy's blood. In the morning, Mina finds Lucy gasping for air and her face coloring is more pale than before. Lucy tells Mina of the weird dreams she's been having.
At Seward's Sanitarium, the doctor and an assistant are looking on as large boxes are being delivered to Carfax Abbey. Renfield starts acting up again too.
Mina finally receives a message that Jonathan has been found very ill and is being cared for at St. Joseph's hospital. She decides to hurry there and help nurse him back to health and bring him home.
